Rock music video 2: Guns N' Roses - Sweet child O mine

Analysis

Editing

In relation to editing, all of the shots are cut very faced paced, this is stereotypical of rock and roll music. As well as this, it creates a sense of chaos and mayhem which is typical to rock and roll music also. In addition, there is varietal use of black and white and normal colour shots. This creates a retro feel to the music video, Guns N' Roses are an old and classic rock band so the black and white footage does fit amongst the colour shots. During the time this music video was shot, they were not as old and classic as they are now, they were in their prime as a rock band, despite this the black and white shots are well suited to the music video.

Mise en scene

Noticeably, the use of musical instruments such as guitars, drum sets and microphones are used as props but they are more subtle as they are expected in a rock and roll music video and are therefore seen less obviously as props. As the shots are of the bands performance, they are seen throughout the entire video. Furthermore, another prop that I saw throughout were cigarettes, the band members were smoking cigarettes in the non performance as well as the performance shots. This gave me the impression they were very causal about their line of work, smoking is also part of the Rock and roll image, so this is typical of the genre.
The clothes the band were wearing (costumes) were very dark, the majority of the pieces of clothing were black which is conventional to the 'darkness' of rock and roll. Most Rock and roll artists wore and still wear dark clothes, its just tradition. The body language seen in the music video from all of the band members was very chilled out and relaxed which gave a 'too cool for school' impression.

Camerawork

As I mentioned in the beginning, the editing was very fast paced and chaotic, but so was the camerawork, the camera was constantly moving and zooming in and out of shots, this added more chaos to the video, but it works if that is the vibe the video is trying to create. The whole video was of the bands performance, despite a few short shots of the band members sitting around and talking to girls.

Grime/Hip-Hop music video analysis 2: Lunar C - Reality check

Analysis

This music video, was born out of a genre called British underground Hip-Hop.

yet to finish

Grime/Hip-Hop Music video analysis 1: Astroid Boyz - Rinsa ft. Manga (roll deep)

"The setting that grime video's are typically set in are the streets and cities that the artist has grown up in. The main artist is being followed around by other people dressed similarly to them who are from the same class of people as the artist. The typical clothing that is worn in grime music video's are jeans and tracksuits (usually black or dark coloured) The connotations of the colour black are connected with power, death and evil. This is similar to the lyrics that are usually spoken in the music video's."

Mise en scene
It is arguable to point out that the mise en scene is highly related to the artist image, from what they are dressed in and the locations they have shot in. Attention and respect are two things most grime artist strive for and they achieve these by creating their own image, they need to stand out from the crowd and be noticeable. The artist in the video, 'The Astroid Boyz' wear a style of clothes called urban street wear, this allows them to create a link with their audience as most people who listen to this type of music dress this way. The clothes they wear are also heavily branded and as far as i know quite expensive, this is where the fans respect them. The locations shot in are parks, alleys, flats etc, these may link to the songs narrative but the also link to the origin of the genre which began on the streets as an underground genre. There is a shot of one of the artist infront of a brick wall, this creates realism and is also conventional of the genre, as are the other locations used.

Conventionally, grime artist never take on random roles, they always play themselves as they are trying to establish their image, unlike pop music where the artist image is already established which allows them to take on random roles. What makes a good grime artist is someone who is respectable, speaking truth and are generally likeable in terms of image and style to the audience.

Camera Work
The use of close ups are highly evident, this shows the artists facial expression and generally how they are reacting to what they are saying. There is also use of mid shots which let some of the background scenery and other artists in the group be seen by the audience. This also creates realism, as they are filming in an open area that hasn't been closed for filming, unlike pop music videos which are generically shot in a studio and don't look as realistic as videos such as this. This blatant realism is how the artists relate to the audience, as whats going on in the video may be highly relatable to the audiences own lives, as they are apart of and follow the same music culture.

Editing
The footage is edited on beat and at the same pace of the track. This is conventional of the genre as the lip synching is vitally important to make it look like the artists are saying their words there and then and not have it looking like they have pre-recorded it and just placed the footage with it. In addition to this, there were some effects included, for instance, when the there was a droned out wobbly sound, there was a linear wobble in the footage that made it look like a TV losing signal slightly. This is effective as it adds excitement to the footage and as it is in time with the music, the audience can begin to piece together the relationship between the video and the sound.

Pop music Video analysis 2: Martin Garrix-Animals

Mise en Scene
The location used for the majority of the music video is a night club and the people in the club are reacting to the music and as the song begins to build up and tension is created, the reactions become bigger and bigger. Everyone looks like they're having the time of their lives dancing around. This is typical in pop music and what the artist may have been trying to do is make the audience understand that Martin Garrix's music has this amazing effect on people. This also links to the big focus of artist image in the pop industry. The costume of the five mysterious figures the camera focus's on are masks of different animals which conceals their identity, but we can still begin to guess that the one with the tiger mask is Martin Garrix himself as he is the main one with the most attention further persuing the idea of artist image.

Editing
On the beat cutting/editing which makes the video easier to watch.

Camera Work
variation between close ups and mid shots of the five masked figures causing chaos and dancing when the song builds up and eventually drops.

Rock Music Video analysis 1: Red Hot Chilli Pepper - Californication

Analysis

The type of video this falls into a category in relation to Andrew Goodwin's theory is disjunctive as the band are taking on roles that are nothing related to their everyday lives. As well as this, there is little narrative to the video, its an animation. It frames, what seems to look like a video game.

Editing

The editing in this music video cuts off the beat. This is stereotypical of a rock music video. Although, the footage is cut off the beat, it is still very fast paced and the irrelevant narrative makes it easy to watch, you do not get bored of watching it as its so spontaneous, you don't know whats going to happen next. For example, there is a quick transition from this snowboarder on top of the train, then going through the tunnel. There is then a jump cut to another animated figure swimming in the depth of the sea. This is very spontaneous and unpredictable, hence why the video does not get boring.

Camera work

As the majority of the video is an animation, there is little camera work used. However, there are sections where there are clips of the band playing there instruments. Conventionally, the main singer is framed the most with close ups and mid-shots. There are also some long shots of the whole band mid performance, this is also typical of rock music video.

Mise en scene
It is obvious to say that the band have no t shirts on and are showing their torso's off. This is another conventional characteristics in rock music videos, they may do this to look more gritty and 'hardcore'. Furthermore, the band footage has been shot infront of a green screen, footage of the sky has then been edited on to create some sense of location. The use of the sky could relate to them being 'sky high' as there is general links to drug use and rock music. as well as this, they may have used this to create the impression that they are out of reality, this goes hand in hand with the animation as it gives the audience an escape from everyday reality.

Music video concepts

What do the real audiences consume?

How do Media industries target the audiences?

Within the media industry, different tactics are used to lure in audiences of certain genres. These tactics are more obviously noticed in genres such as pop music. For instance, Miley cyrus reinvented her pop career through wearing reveling clothes and behaving in a shocking manor. Predominantly known as a taboo. This behavior drew lots of attention towards her, this is how she gained her new, older fan base, but also how she caught the eye of critics slating her. But in the industry they say 'any press is good press' this relates to the fact that if your in the center of attention you will be noticed, whether its for good or bad, its still publicity.

Here we see Miley in very reveling clothing and behaving eratically:

As we can see by the reaction of the woman in the far left of the image, we see one side of the attention being drawn towards Miley, the woman looks shocked and embarrassed for her.

Yet another example of Mileys new style. We get the impression she's behaving this way on purpose for attention.

In relation to the genre me and my group are focusing on (drum and bass), these tactics are less obvious and harder to spot. The target audience of Drum & Bass music is a group that is harder to define than it is for other genres of music because they are not limited to any age or gender. The people who are typically assumed to be included in the audience of  drum and bass music are ravers, a social group made up of many different backgrounds who create the culture seen that then unite to make the audience of drum and bass. This type of music comes with a certain life style or culture that many people would not understand or would find immoral and unjust. This is due to the negative stereotype heavily linking drugs to this genre.

Drum and bass institutions may target their audiences through putting on various events were the top talent in the genre perform, from dj's and producers to mc's. This is advertised through social media and public advertisements. These events are unlike events from other genres as they usually go on from 7pm to 6am. The 'raves' are presented in top venues and night clubs which also draw in the audiences. As the genre of drum and bass is less dependent on the artist image and more dependent on the music and the social aspects, there is less publicity and attention on the identity of the artist. this is why drum and bass differs so much from the likes of pop music as there are different focuses.

Who are the specific audiences for paticular products?

The genre of our music is Drum and Bass (DnB), it also contains an element of neuro funk. The typical stereo type of the audience to this genre would be males or females from any ethnicity but the genre's fans are mostly Caucasian. Male fans of this genre are typically seen to be wearing stylish, yet basic clothes such as jeans, basic patterned t-shirts and coats/hoodies. The male fans from this genre typically look "Normal" and it would be difficult to tell by looking at them what genre of music they are interested in. This would be a typical outfit of a male fan.http://onlinestreetwear.files.wordpress.com/2013/11/undefeated-fall-2013-lookbook1.jpg?w=300&h=261

Female fans however tend to wear a similar urban style, yet it is somewhat more revealing and free than that of the male counterpart. The most generic outfit female fans wear tend to be 2 piece outfits  such as the below.

Similar artists to our own often produce a very similar type of music. Drum and Bass is not a hugely diverse genre and many tracks sound the same. Fans of DnB however are very accepting of all DnB that is created, meaning there is generally no divide between fans and all fans can come together to listen to the music. Due to the lack of diversity in the DnB genre, it makes it a very individual style of music, whilst having a singular individual fan base, where everything is unanimously liked or dis-liked.

There is no typical age for DnB fans as they tend to be ravers, it is open to all ages, ethnicity's and cliques however it only tends to interest those who are already seen as "ravers".

Primal instinct lyric analysis

Artist Image: MaXX

MC MaXX (artist image)

Drum and Bass is the genre that our music video song falls into, this means our group need to choose the image of the artist carefully to link to the genre conventions already in place.
As the artist we are focusing on is the 'MC' which stands for master of ceremonies. This is the male rapping through out the song. This is not everyday hip-hop rap, its different due to the genre its for. For instance, its faster as the beats per minute of the song is higher than that of hip-hop (170BMP), as well as the fact the flow is different to match the sound of the song.  In the drum and bass scene, mc's are though of very highly, and are well respected, this is just something that comes with the territory. This means our artist needs to look respectable and conventional to the genre. After doing research, we can start to piece together ideas of what we want and need our artist to look like.

For instance, these images are of current drum and bass Mc's.

Mc Harry Shotta (left)
Mc Evil B (right)

As we can see, the two dress very similarly, in a very casual and urban street wear style. Both are seen to wear snap back hats. These artists dress very similarly to pop artists as drum and bass is much more underground and edgy. Mc's in the the drum and bass genre are also looked up to by fans for what they wear, as well as the messages they convey in their lyrics. Shotta (left) is wearing dark colors which is a factor our group may want to relay in our video for our artist.

Evil B (right) is shot in that picture to be actively mc'ing during the time that picture was shot. He is using hand gestures to emphasise his lyrics, this is a characteristic most Mc's utilise to add meaning to what they are saying as well as being physically active whilst 'spitting bars'. All of these factors are things we need to take into consideration when shooting our music video to create realism and to keep it conventional.

Our artist, will be dressed in reasonably dark colors as this will compliment the use of black and white filters being added. Also, there may be small small areas of color, the logo on the snap back and other clothes MaXX will be wearing could include some color that we could show through the black and white as when this is done successfully it can look really professional. This would also add some excitement to the video as arguably, black and white footage through out the whole video is quite boring. Furthermore, the clothing real Mc's wear are normally heavily branded, this could be a feature we include as it will solidify the belief that MaXX is a genuine Mc. On the other hand, we could go the other way and have less heavily branded clothes to create individuality to that Mc that would make him stand out from the others. Artist image in this genre is very important, but not in the same way it is in Pop music. Image in the drum and bass scene is all about being 'real' and not fake. It is arguable to say that in Pop music, the artist would have an image that pleases the public, not necessarily to please themselves. They may be told what to wear by their manager as that is the image they think will 'sell'. In drum and bass the artist dress to please themselves, and the 'realness' is where they gain respect from their fans.

Possible outfits for MaXX:
Black snap back hat
Grey branded tshirt
Black hoodie
black jeans
nike trainers
Necklace

Song choice: Mefjus & Bowsar ft. MC Maksim - Primal Instinct

Song choice for music video task:

This is the song my group have chosen to complete the music video task for, the reasons behind this is that the majority of the group have some interest in the genre which is drum and bass (D&B). Although this is drum and bass, it also fits into to the sub-genre of neurofunk.

Upon hearing this song, we all had strong ideas on what we could include such as the footage being in black and white, which we have found is conventional to the genres' music videos. As well as this, there were suggestions of some colors being made visible through the black and white filter, in a 'Sin City' style. In relation to location, to keep it conventional we aim to shoot in an area that looks rough and edgy to keep the video conventional.

Roles and responsibilities.

Andrew Goodwin- James Egan

Illustritive- Chase and Status- Flashing lights-
In this video we see a woman go out to a gallery, in which she meets another female and they progress to go out for a night clubbing and drinking. The lyrics seem to have no correspondence with the song, without the video the song has no meaning. The viewer understands the song in a different sense as at the end of the video we see the woman is drugged, she dies and becomes the next exhibition at the art gallery, along with lots of previous victims who we soon realize met the same fate. Combining the lyrics "I see my whole life flashing right before me" with the video we begin to realize the song is much more sinister than it lets on. At this point the protagonist has been drugged as we also see the music come to a faint end.

Amplifying- Faithless- Insomnia-

The lyrics to this song are fairly dark and indicate that the singer is going through tough times as he is unable to sleep and "fights dark forces in the night", through hearing the lyrics to the song we get a vague understanding of the emotion in the song, but when combined with the video it give a darker meaning to the lyrics we hear. The singer is frequently shown, looking deprived of sleep and physically drained. The video is also in noir showing the black and white emotions the signer is undergoing. At points we also see a child shouting or screaming, but with no sound or context to the lyrics. This suggested to me that the singer is "under attack" by actual night terrors that are plaguing him. In this screen shot I am showing what we mainly see, a simple noir shot of the singer lip syncing.

Disjunctive- Arctic Monkeys- Florescent Adolescent-

As we can see from this video the lyrics and context of the song have absolutely nothing to do with the video. The video also cuts off beat and has no sort of undertone you could link the music to. The music seems to be about a woman's life when she was younger, yet the video show a group of clowns, fighting a group of men for almost no apparent reason. In this screen shot from the end of the video as the music becomes to draw to a close, a clown sets an oil trail alight killing a man inside a car. This is in no way related to the song and has no way of making the lyrics seem different from a viewer of the videos perspective.

Andrew Goodwin's theory:

Goodwin's theory stated there were 5 things that make a music video, a music video. These things were; Thought through beat (seeing what the lyrics mean in correspondence to the video), the relationship between the song and visuals seen on screen, the relation between the music and visuals, technical aspects of the video, and footage of the star of the video being made the center of attention.

Thought through beat- This can be broken down into 3 separate steps, the first being to analyze the song and see what the chorus and individual verse's mean. The second step is seeing if the main singer has an individual thing about of them, weather its voice or style it is needed to maintain a star image. The final aspect of this part would be the story the artist is telling to the viewer.

Relation between song and visuals- There are also 3 ways the song relates to the song and the visuals, these are; Illustrative, meaning the video uses certain shots and images to help explain their song and genre. The second style is Amplification, this is when the images and camera shots are shown frequently and link to the song to and video to make us really think about the video and lyrics. The final style is disjuncture, this is when the song and lyrics have absolutely no relevance to the video.

Relation between the music and visuals- Supposedly by making a character act out or do what the lyrics are saying, it makes the video much more well received to people as it is promoting itself. This could be seen from the song "Rari workout" as the stars of the video are all working out and driving Ferrari's as the song is playing.

Technical aspects- By including a narrative into songs, as the viewer sees the video it makes them much more likely to watch the video if it is telling a story, this then increases the chance of the viewer liking the song. By having a narrative it allows for the viewer to feel connected with the song, as if it is taking them on a journey, this can be seen in the song "Handlebars" by Flobots.

The star- By making the star the center of attention, dressing them stylishly, and having them act cool or in a particular way makes viewers like them. By having everyone think you are very cool or stylish, generally makes people like you, so in this sense, being displayed as the center of attention in the video, makes the star look better to the public.

Analysis of a pop video- Justin Bieber Baby. James Egan

In this post i will look at the video for Justin Biebers, "Baby".

In the video we see Bieber in stylish clothes at the time, with a large group of "friends" at the start. Before the music has even began an image is being painted into the head of mostly female viewers that Bieber is a very cool, stylish and popular individual. We see Bieber with a group of his friends as he approaches a girl and recives "respect" before going to talk to her.

At this point Bieber makes eye contact with a attractive and seemingly popular girl before proceeding to start the first verse of the song. As Bieber is singing we are cutting between him lip syncing and the story of him a the girl. Bieber scores a strike in the bowling alley where the video is set seconds after meeting her, this impresses her, all her friends, and Biebers friends. By now an image is stuck in peoples heads that he is a very cool, popular ladies man who is adept and bowling.

As we are listening to the first verse the female counterpart seems to match Bieber in his popularity, fashion sense and bowling skill. However as Bieber approaches her we hear the chorus for the first time, in witch it repeatedly cuts to him singing the chorus both to the female, and seemingly to the viewer.

We continue to see a process of Bieber chasing the girl around and hearing another verse and chorus before the rapper Ludacris enters the video. Ludacris continues to rap/sing his own verse in the song. This allows for a different target audience as Bieber goes for a young stylish look, yet on the other hand Ludacris looks like a rapper.

We are followed by yet another chorus until the music comes to an end and we see that Justin did manage to get seemingly the girl of his dreams, further leading viewers to believe that he is a true ladies man, full of style, suave and romance at the age of 13.

Analysis of a pop video. James Egan

For my 2nd interpretation i will be looking a much different type of song, this is a mixture of pop and rap as this particular artist has catered for a mass audience by making this sort of song.

As the video starts we see Kendricks name come up in a strange font followed by the song title. The video continues with the backing music but no lyrics, we see our artist falling through darkness flaling at the space around him, yet he does not look worried, he is wearing very stylish clothes and gold chains indicating he is very well off. As the artist falls through darkness it could later have a subtle link to the song.

As we cut from this to a plain background we see a beautiful/sexy woman, this attracts many viewers simply because she is eye catching. Now that we have seen these two people in quick succession, we instantly link them together. After seeing the female and hearing the words "Drank' we see a glass bottle being smashed, since the bottle is upside down this may suggest a feeling of disorientation. This instantly allows for the viewer to gain a understanding that alcohol is involved with whats happening in the video.

We see the artist in an abandoned house looking at pictures and specific items whilst hearing lyrics about his grandfather, this allows us to see that the artist seems troubled, we also see a bottle of drink in his hand, confirming the possibility that the protagonist is an alcoholic. By seeing these things it becomes clear that this video is structured to be very illustrative and literal.

The artist continues to rap/sing about previous party's he had been at, and that he had been drinking frequently, allowing for the lyrics to gain a new meaning when we see our protagonist struggling and/or drinking in sorrow. As the chorus is being sung we go back to the very start of the video, and see the protagonist falling in reverse. This may make the viewer feel as if they are seeing the protagonist beginning a road to recovery almost.

As we return to the basic backing music, the setting changes to a party, we are unsure if this is a flash back or present as the protagonist is slipping in and out of what may be recovery.

As the verse proceeds through this setting we see people partying and the protagonist briefly rapping the the viewer, as the chorus comes back however we see our protagonist in multiple different costumes and he seems intoxicated. By now the viewer is completely enticed in the story and the music seems to further its meaning by being so closely linked to what we are seeing.
The chorus fades out and instead of going into another verse we hear a different type of music, the tempo is lowered significantly and our protagonist is now well dressed and representing himself as people would want to see him. By standing next to the large and expensive car it makes the viewer think that Kendrick is very rich, stylish and cool. In this section he talks about shooting a gun, this adds more context to the video and makes the viewer think of gangsters.
As the video draws to an end we a re-introduced to our original base music. We see a montage of different settings, ranging from Kendrick himself, to the party, then to the woman at the start follwed by Kendrick falling into a swimming pool as the music comes to an end, we see a unidentified person help him out of the pool.

This video was structured as a very easily seen story and allowed for the artist to be seen as a cool gangster. This means that people are going to be more likely to check out other songs as we have the idea in our heads that his music is well woven, has deeper meanings and that the person himself is very cool.

Analysis of a pop video- Miley Cyrus Party in the U.S.A

Analysis of a pop video 1:

Firstly, the use of cinematography in this music video makes the genre specific. An example of this is the establishing shot in which shows the setting of a lot of young people who are well dressed, surrounding expensive looking cars this highlights the wealth of the young people and therefore the artist, this is important because a lot of the time in pop video's the artist is showing off their possessions. This makes the audience want to be in the same setting that the music video is showing, idolizing the artist as not many people can relate to the music video which is a stereotypical 'American teenager' setting.
Additionally, There are close ups of Miley Cyrus standing in front of a car this illustrates her independence and youth. This is what young people aspire to be. There are dancers in the background but they aren't in the limelight of Miley which is important as in pop music video's the artist has to stand out and you will notice that most of the shots would be close ups of the artist.
Next, in most of the shots Miley is in the middle of the people surrounding her. This shows that her popularity is high and that she wants people to follow in her steps/ be like her.
In multiple shots Miley is standing in front of the American flag, this appeals to patriots and is indicating that America is the place to be. By showing her 'life' as exciting it makes the young audience envy her and with envy come the love of the artist.

Next mise en scene is used to show rebellion and youth, an example of this is the close up shot of Miley's feet when she sings the line 'Everybody's in stiletto's, guess I never got the memo' the close up shows a pair of cowboy boots. Not only does this show rebellion but it shows that she doesn't care about what people are going to think or say about her as it is followed up but a close up of her face that does not look bothered that she is going to stand out.
I also noticed that in the beginning of the song, she is dressed quite innocently but as the song progresses her outfits and actions start to become more provocative, this is seen when she is swinging on chains.

Furthermore, in her performance it always shows Miley smiling or laughing which relates to the lyrics and the upbeat song. This shows the audience that they should enjoy their lives and therefore listen to her music as all the people surrounding her are enjoying themselves whilst listening to her music. There are drops in the tempo of the song after the fastest tempo which could suggest that even when your having fun you have to have some kind of rest which the audience can relate to. The use of editing is important in this pop video to show the different scenes, cross cutting is used to show the different scenery and giving the audience a glimpse of the different things that are happening.

Pop music Video analysis: Rizzle Kicks - Down with the trumpets

Carol Vernaillis. Lucy King

Carol vernallis analysed and compared the editing in music videos to the editing in hollywood films, she stated multiple examples of how they differed. For example, she found that in music video's the order of shots are unconventional. That they shift more freely between shots in no particular order. this differs to hollywood film because in hollywood films there is a conventional typical order of shots that are used. Another example is the discontinuity in music video's is completely different to hollywood as it is used a lot. Pop videos draw us in away from the narrative by foregrounding other structures and elements e.g. the music. Conversely, Hollywood films draw the audience in to the narrative with the use of continuity editing.

A further example of when Carol Vernallis compared music video's to Hollywood films is in music videos the multiplicity of incomplete sometimes obscure paths in comparison to Hollywood filming in which there is a single clear path between shots.

Additionally, i learned that Vernallis said that the shots of the artist will encourage us to piece together a 'Phantasmagorical body' meaning that there are a lot of shots that flick from body parts of the artist into fully body shots and this is an example of objectifying women. This is used a lot when an artist is trying to gain the approval of male fans. This is seen in almost all of Rihanna's music video's. The use of 'phantasmagorical body shots' allows the audience to perceive the artist in whatever way they desire, building a picture in their head of what the artist looks like based of the multiple shots of what each body part looks like.

Below are two examples of which approve Carol Vernallis' theory.

Grime is a genre originated in London, it was constructed by combining U.K garage and hip-hop like genres. Some well known grime artists include Dizzee Rascal, Wiley and JME. The reputation that they gained for grime music around the world was huge in contrast to the underground name it took before. Hip-Hop is sensed in Grime but with a few differences. The clothing that is typically worn in Grime music videos are; hoodies, trainers, hats and jeans.
Moreover it is seen that in videos they also wear big items of jewellery to replicate the characteristics of Hip-Hop. Ever since artists such as Chipmunk, Dizzee and others have gained MOBOS and other awards, reputation has been gained within Grime. The target audience for grime music is mainly the youth of today predominantly male listeners with the exception of a few female listeners.

We have changed our genre to drum and bass, however grime is incorporated in this so this post will still be useful.

Andrew Goodwin - Max Dandy

The Theory

Andrew Goodwin is a media theorist, his theory 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory'outlines how there are key features that need to be focused on when analyzing a music video.

The first point is whether the visuals in the video illustrate, amplify or contradict the lyrics, for instance if the visuals were to illustrate the  lyrics, the actions in the video would closely match what the artist was singing about throughout the duration of the video.

Next, is the relationship between the song and the visuals, the same as before, the song can either illustrate, amplify or contradict the visuals. In relation to which music videos do which, each genre will have a typical music video style that each will tend to follow, to create an example, in the genre of pop music, the producers will typically choose an illustrative music video, as this type is best received by the audience.

There are also certain technical aspects that need to be considered, if the music video has a narrative it will be much easier to watch for the audience, this increase the chances of them having an overall positive opinion of the song. If the music video had little or no narrative, the audience will struggle to follow it and could become bored or uninterested.

As well as this, the artist will stay at the center of attention for the majority if not for the whole music video. This is done through use of stylish costume, unblemished make-up, jewelry, expensive cars, and generally anything that will make them stand out from the rest of the people in the music video. Close-ups of the artist will also keep them in the limelight.

Three further steps are taken to look into the meaning of each verse and chorus, next is if the artist has a characteristic that makes them unique such as their style or voice that allows them to maintain stardom. In the modern age of pop music, a husky voice may be seen as unique and the sound that certain record labels are looking for. The final stage is breaking down the message or story the artist is trying to tell the audience.

From this, Goodwin claimed that their were three different types of music video; Illustrative, Amplified and disjunctive.

Here are some examples of each.

 Illustrative -

In terms of media Theorist Andrew Goodwin, an Illustrative music video is one that cuts on the beat of the music and uses images and footage that convey the messages that the lyrics are giving (video is very literal to what the artist is saying). Furthermore, in a music video of this type, Goodwin claims that the Band or artist should dress as expected (like a generic pop star), in modern fashionable clothing that is loved by the general public. This type of music video is very common in the industry as they are the most popular and are arguably the most easy to produce.

Amplified

An amplified music video will either cut on the beat or off the beat in specific areas to emphasize features. The visuals will amplify the lyrics and their may be some hidden messages. The band or artist will usually take on fictional roles in this type of music video.
Disjunctive

In a disjunctive music video, the video typically cuts off the beat and the visuals will relate in little or no way to the lyrics. The artist(s) will take on roles or images that are completely unrelated to them. This is why the type of music video is used for Drum and Bass tracks as the image of the artist is less important in that genre, unlike pop music where star image is everything. Pop musicians will be unlikely to ever use this type of video.

Carol Vernallis - Max Dandy

Carol Vernallis's theory (taken from 'The Kindest Cut'):

This theory closely analysis's the comparison between the editing between music videos and Hollywood films. This comparison allows us to highlight that distinct approaches were taken in the production between the two different types of media.

There were numerous analytical points that Vernallis found and stated related to the difference between music and Hollywood film videos.

The first point highlighted is that in music videos, there are various narrative strands that are sometimes incomplete, usually in this type of video, these different strands are cross cut edited together. This links to montage editing as it creates the feeling that a lot has happened within the few minutes the music video runs for. This differs from narratives in Hollywood films as there is typically one clear narrative throughout the film, with a distinct beginning, middle and end. For instance, establishing shots are used to create the distinct beginning of the film.

In Pharrel Williams music video of his hit song 'Happy' it is clear that this type of 'choppy' narrative is used as throughout the video, there are shots of various points in time of the artist and of different characters in their daily life being 'happy'. These various narratives are cross cut, and as i mentioned previously, this gives the audience the sense that a lot has happened throughout the duration of the video (montage editing)
we know that the shots are from different
point in time through the use of costume
change. As well as costume, location allows us to differ between the different narrative strands. The fact that some shots are in the day and some are in the night also allow us to notice the difference. This characteristic of the music video also allows us to feel the sense that time has progressed quickly and that there has been a lot that has happened during the video.

Generally, in a music video, there is an unconventionally shot order and shots are shifted between more freely, on the other hand, in Hollywood films there is a conventional shot order. This is evident in Calvin Harris's video 'Summer'.

Research- Grime video analysis. Lucy King

This music video is an example of our genre- Grime.
The setting that grime video's are typically set in are the streets and cities that the artist has grown up in. The main artist is being followed around by other people dressed similarly to them who are from the same class of people as the artist. The typical clothing that is worn in grime music video's are jeans and tracksuits (usually black or dark coloured) The connotations of the colour black are connected with power, death and evil. This is similar to the lyrics that are usually spoken in the music video's.

The mise en scene is very specific to the brand image of the artist. It is important that the artist stands out in his own way and gains the audiences attention and respect. In this video you see a lot of different scenery such as parks, flats and alleys. All of these images that we see may relate to the songs narrative. There are shots in which the artist is standing in front of a brick wall down an alley. This gives the audience a sense of realism. Typically in grime music video's, the artist and the people within the music video will wear brands that link in to the youth culture of the recent time.

In most of grime music video's, in particular the one below. The artist are themselves in the video's which helps the audience relate to what the artist is singing/rapping about. You will find many of the audience will be able to relate in some way or another to the setting or the lyrics.

The shots used in this video are many close ups to show the facial expressions of the artist/s and mid shots so you still focus on the artist but also on the scenery in the background and whats going on around them. This is to show that they are everyday people and that everything that's happening/ has happened to the artist could happen to anyone and this is how he relates the lyrics and the song to the audience.

Andrew Goodwin- Lucy King

The star- By making the star the centre of attention, dressing them stylishly, and having them act cool or in a particular way makes viewers like them. By having everyone think you are very cool or stylish, generally makes people like you, so in this sense, being displayed as the center of attention in the video, makes the star look better to the public.

Amplification:

Illustration:

Illustration is the simplest and easiest to use when making a music video. This is because it is just a literal meaning to the song’s lyrics in visual form. Owl City use illustrative ideas in 'Fireflies' when the artist (Adam Young) is singing and as he says ‘fireflies’ the word fireflies comes up on the screen to a little toy gadget. The chorus shows illustration every time.

Disjuncture:

Disjuncture is the idea of completely ignoring the song’s meaning or concept completely and creating a whole new set of meanings or images that can be put to the song, a perfect example of this would be Cant stop by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Disjuncture music video's usually ignore the songs intent or theoretical meanings. The film usually cuts off the beat most of the time (but not always) This is a sign of a badly filmed music video. The images throughout the music video's do not usually relate to the lyrics used, this is usually used with bands that are already well established who cannot afford to take risks. With disjuncture music video's the band usually take on an image that is the complete opposite of the expected image.
