How do Media industries target the audiences?

Within the media industry, different tactics are used to lure in audiences of certain genres. These tactics are more obviously noticed in genres such as pop music. For instance, Miley cyrus reinvented her pop career through wearing reveling clothes and behaving in a shocking manor. Predominantly known as a taboo. This behavior drew lots of attention towards her, this is how she gained her new, older fan base, but also how she caught the eye of critics slating her. But in the industry they say 'any press is good press' this relates to the fact that if your in the center of attention you will be noticed, whether its for good or bad, its still publicity.

Here we see Miley in very reveling clothing and behaving eratically:

As we can see by the reaction of the woman in the far left of the image, we see one side of the attention being drawn towards Miley, the woman looks shocked and embarrassed for her.

Yet another example of Mileys new style. We get the impression she's behaving this way on purpose for attention.

In relation to the genre me and my group are focusing on (drum and bass), these tactics are less obvious and harder to spot. The target audience of Drum & Bass music is a group that is harder to define than it is for other genres of music because they are not limited to any age or gender. The people who are typically assumed to be included in the audience of  drum and bass music are ravers, a social group made up of many different backgrounds who create the culture seen that then unite to make the audience of drum and bass. This type of music comes with a certain life style or culture that many people would not understand or would find immoral and unjust. This is due to the negative stereotype heavily linking drugs to this genre.

Drum and bass institutions may target their audiences through putting on various events were the top talent in the genre perform, from dj's and producers to mc's. This is advertised through social media and public advertisements. These events are unlike events from other genres as they usually go on from 7pm to 6am. The 'raves' are presented in top venues and night clubs which also draw in the audiences. As the genre of drum and bass is less dependent on the artist image and more dependent on the music and the social aspects, there is less publicity and attention on the identity of the artist. this is why drum and bass differs so much from the likes of pop music as there are different focuses.
